COVID-19 Plan

2023 Fools Five COVID-19 Auction and Race Plan

The Fools Five Committee is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment that supports the fun run, social, and fundraising activities for the Fall 2021 Fools Five Weekend. COVID-19 prevention strategies remain critical to protecting people especially in areas of substantial-to-high community transmission levels. We believe it is important that we all remember to respect the decisions and actions of others in our community and committee while we seek the common goal of a safe environment.

Together with local public health officials, the Fools Five Committee will consider multiple factors when making decisions about implementing or reducing layered prevention strategies against COVID-19.  The Fools Five Weekend is supported by the strong participation of the Lewiston community as well as individuals from across the state and nation.  We ask that all participants respect the safety and welfare of the individuals that come together to support the Fools Five activities.

All protocols are subject to change if substantial or high levels of COVID-19 transmission occur in the local community or in the case of a mandate by an external governing agency.

1)  Federal Government and Minnesota Rule Requirements

Handling a suspected or confirmed case of COVID-19: Minnesota Rule 4605.7070 requires any person in charge of any institution, school, child care facility, or camp to report cases of COVID-19 to the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH). See MDH: Reportable Disease Rule.  If a confirmed case of COVID-19 is reported at the Fools Five Auction or Fun Run, the appropriate contact will be made with the Minnesota Department of Health.

2) Face Coverings

Masking is required for all people entering enclosed buildings, including volunteers, race participants, and auction participants regardless of vaccination status.

Masking is strongly recommended for groups of individuals from different households that will be volunteering or participating in Fools Five activities that are in contained outdoor spaces and which will last longer than 15 minutes.

3) Physical Distancing

Physical distancing will be encouraged while participating in enclosed areas.  Fun Run registration tables will be placed 6 feet apart with signs stating 3 feet minimum distance while waiting to register. The traffic flow for registration at the Lewiston Altura High School will be marked so participants enter in one door and exit out a separate door.  Signage will state that as soon as individuals are finished registering, they are to proceed outdoors.

Physical distancing during the auction will be supported by setting up displays with 9 feet walkways, placing display tables a minimum of 6 feet apart, and indicating a flow of traffic to offer additional space between individuals looking at auction items.

Seating will be outdoors for the auction and food serving.  Seating will be in various groupings with six feet between groups.  The groupings will allow participants to monitor who is within 6 feet of their seating for any necessary contact tracing.

4) Health Screening and Staying Home When Sick

Volunteers and participants of all Fools Five activities are expected to complete a self-assessment of their health following this symptom checklist.

Volunteers and participants are required to stay home if experiencing one of the common symptoms below;

  • Fever of 100.4 or higher
  • A new cough, or a cough that gets worse
  • Difficulty breathing
  • New loss of taste or smell

Volunteers and participants are required to stay home if experiencing 2 or more of the symptoms below;

  • Sore throat
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Chills
  • Muscle Pain
  • Excessive fatigue
  • New or severe headache
  • New nasal congestion or runny nose

5) Contact Tracing

If the Fools Five Committee is notified of a positive case that was present and able to infect others at a Fools Five activity, the committee will encourage the positive case to contact anyone that was within 6 feet of them for more than 15 minutes.  The committee will not complete contact tracing for any of the Fools Five events as identifying close contacts will not be possible by the committee members.

Any positive case reports to the Fools Five Committee will be shared with the Winona County COVID Health committee.

 6)Respiratory Etiquette and Hand Hygiene

Masking wearing and hand hygiene will be strongly recommended during the Fools Five events.  Handwashing stations and hand sanitizer will be available at all events for the public.  Hand hygiene will be strongly encouraged when entering a facility, before and after eating food, using restroom facilities, and after blowing one’s nose, coughing, or sneezing.
